About Us

About Us

SoftCrit is an independent software review publication. We install, configure, and stress-test the tools people actually pay for — then write about what survives the test, and what doesn’t.

Who We Are

SoftCrit was started because the software review space was, frankly, broken. Too many “best of” pages are rewritten from vendor press releases, ranked by who pays the highest affiliate commission, and loaded with quotes that no human being ever actually said. We built SoftCrit to be the site we wished existed: one where a real person signs up for the product, uses it in their own daily workflow for weeks, and tells you the truth — including the parts the vendor would rather you not notice.

We cover productivity tools, email clients, team collaboration software, AI app builders, coaching platforms, and small-business tooling. Our audience is mostly solo operators, freelancers, and small teams who are choosing between two or three products and want an honest answer without sitting through a 30-minute demo.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: independent, hands-on testing with no paid rankings. We do not get paid to write positive reviews. We do not accept “editorial control” from vendors. We do not trade coverage for placement on a pricing page. The score a product gets is the score it earned when a real person used it on a real machine, for real work.

What this means in practice: every tool we review is tested on the same hardware, against the same account, over a multi-week window. Two editors score each product independently, then we average the two scores. If a product loses a feature or raises its price, we go back and update the review rather than letting stale advice sit on the page.

How We Evaluate Products

Our methodology is deliberately boring, because boring is what makes it trustworthy. In broad strokes:

  • Same setup, every time. We run competing products on the same laptop, the same operating system build, and the same Gmail or work account, so differences in speed, sync, and keyboard flow are real differences — not artifacts of a fresh install.
  • We live with it for weeks. Most reviews on the web are written after a 60-minute demo. We use the product as our daily driver for roughly three weeks, through both personal and team scenarios.
  • Two people, two scores. Each product is scored independently by a second editor before publication, and the two scores are averaged. This reduces the single-reviewer bias that plagues most independent review sites.
  • We triangulate with real users. We pull in verified feedback from public review platforms like G2 and Capterra, and we attribute quotes rather than inventing them.

The Team

Sarah Bennett

Sarah Bennett

Senior Software Reviewer

Sarah leads hands-on testing across email clients and task management tools. She has spent more than a decade using and reviewing productivity software, and she is the reason every review on this site includes a real price math breakdown rather than a marketing bullet list.

Rachel Whitfield

Rachel Whitfield

Productivity Tools Editor

Rachel edits our productivity coverage and owns the scoring rubric. Before SoftCrit she ran operations at a 40-person startup, which is why she cares more about onboarding time and teammate permissions than about flashy feature lists.

Dana Caldwell

Dana Caldwell

SaaS & Collaboration Analyst

Dana covers team inboxes, collaboration stacks, and coaching software. She specializes in the gap between what a SaaS company advertises on its pricing page and what a five-person team actually ends up paying after seats, add-ons, and integrations.

Marcus Hale

Marcus Hale

Senior Technology Writer

Marcus writes our longer explainer and comparison pieces, including AI app builders and AI video tools. He is responsible for keeping our comparisons fair: when two products solve different problems, he says so instead of forcing a winner.
